Designing products to reduce crime has a long history (e.g. the evolution of money) but this approach has not been applied to most contemporary products.
If designers ‘think crime’ as part of the design process, the crime potential for products can be reduced.
This Design Out Crime competition (DOC awards '08) invites submissions of products that have been designed to reduce crimes such as theft, assault, terrorism and vandalism.
The table below provides some examples.
Type of Crime | Products designed to reduce opportunities for crime |
Terrorism | Baggage scanners, metal detectors |
Burglary | More secure doors, security screens, locks, alarms, lighting |
Car crime | Immobilisers, steering locks, property marking and engine identification numbers |
Theft (shop-lifting) | Location of expensive items, locking devices, electronic tagging, property marking |
Theft (virtual) | Internet security, credit card security |
Vandalism / graffiti | Robust materials, anti-vandalism lighting, bus shelter design, designs that promote surveillance and visibility |
Drugs | Limit to sale of products containing pseudo-ephedrine |
Assault / violence | Personal alarms, repellent devices, more secure bags / rucksacks, shatter-proof drinking glasses in bars |
Please register (on left) to submit your designs via the 'Submissions' button above.
